We can repeat doctrines at an intellectual level without imparting life. If we're content with a small measure of intimacy, then that's all we will experience.
Without true intimacy, prayer is reduced to mere liturgy and mechanical discourse. To call prayer a discipline is to relegate the Lover of our souls to just another obligation we must tend to.
