Dreaming With God

(Read John 14 & 15)

Genesis 2:19 19Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name.

(The bible shows us how co-laboring works. At the creation: God let Adam name all the animals. Names in those days were more than just cute labels to distinguish the creatures. Names were assigned according to character. They indicated what kind of being they would be. When God gave Adam the privilege and responsibility of naming the animals, he was inviting him to assign character and nature to those creatures, he would spend his life with. God created it all, Adam added his creative expression by giving the animals certain natures – that’s co-laboring.)

John 15:15, 14:14, 15:7 15“No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you. 14“If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it. 7“If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

(God has elevated us from servants to friends. He invites us into a relationship that goes beyond employee/employer interaction. He is willing for us to engage Him, to change His mind, direct His ideas, to share in His unfolding creative work. He does not lack for ideas; He just enjoys our participation.)

Exodus 32:11-14 11Then Moses entreated the LORD his God, and said, “O LORD, why does Your anger burn against Your people whom You have brought out from the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? 12“Why should the Egyptians speak, saying, ‘With evil intent He brought them out to kill them in the mountains and to destroy them from the face of the earth’? Turn from Your burning anger and change Your mind about doing harm to Your people. 13“Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your servants to whom You swore by Yourself, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heavens, and all this land of which I have spoken I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.’” 14So the LORD changed His mind about the harm which He said He would do to His people.

(God was interacting with Moses as a friend. This was a conversation between intimates, not master and servant.)

1 Kings 8:15-17 15He said, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who spoke with His mouth to my father David and has fulfilled it with His hand, saying, 16‘Since the day that I brought My people Israel from Egypt, I did not choose a city out of all the tribes of Israel in which to build a house that My name might be there, but I chose David to be over My people Israel.’ 17“Now it was in the heart of my father David to build a house for the name of the LORD, the God of Israel.

(David’s creativity and desires wrote history because God embraced him. This is absolutely foreign to most of our ways of thinking. We wait for instruction and work hard to suppress our own ideas. God’s approach is different. He has made Himself vulnerable to the desires of His people. History unfolds, according to what we do, what we pray, what we don’t do and what we don’t pray. He gave us kingdom principles that set up our parameters. Then He said, “dreamers come! Let’s dream together and write the story of human history.”)
