THE PARABLES OF THE TALENTS AND MINAS

Parable of the Talents

Matthew 25:14-30 - 14 “For it is just like a man about to go on a journey, who called his own slaves and entrusted his possessions to them. 15 To one he gave five [a]talents, to another, two, and to another, one, each according to his own ability; and he went on his journey. 16 Immediately the one who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and gained five more talents. 17 In the same manner the one who had received the two talents gained two more. 18 But he who received the one talent went away, and dug a hole in the ground and hid his [b]master’s money. 19 “Now after a long time the master of those slaves *came and *settled accounts with them. 20 The one who had received the five talents came up and brought five more talents, saying, ‘Master, you entrusted five talents to me. See, I have gained five more talents.’ 21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your [c]master.’22 “Also the one who had received the two talents came up and said, ‘Master, you entrusted two talents to me. See, I have gained two more talents.’ 23 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ 24 “And the one also who had received the one talent came up and said, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow and gathering where you scattered no seed. 25 And I was afraid, and went away and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what is yours.’ 26 “But his master answered and said to him, ‘You wicked, lazy slave, you knew that I reap where I did not sow and gather where I scattered no seed. 27 Then you ought to have put my money [d]in the bank, and on my arrival I would have received my money back with interest. 28 Therefore take away the talent from him, and give it to the one who has the ten talents.’ 29 “For to everyone who has, more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away. 30 Throw out the worthless slave into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. NASB

The parable of the talents (see Matthew 25:14-30) emphasizes that not all believers are given the same level of callings and gifts. The man who travels to the far country is Jesus and the servants represent us. A talent is a measure of money that represents the level of our call and gifts.

TWO IMPORTANT POINTS:

1. All of the servants are given something -- this tells us that there is not one person in the church without a CALLING on their life, accompanied by gifts.

2. The different levels of calls and gifts given to each of the servants were according to their own ability. Our ability is also given by God. We have nothing of value that was not given to us.
1 Corinthians 4:7 - "For who differs from another? And what do you have that you did not receive?"

THE THIRD SERVANT

Contrast the action of the third servant with that of the first two:

The faithful servants "went and traded" (v.16). The fearful one "went and dug" (V.18).
The first two invested. The last one buried.
The first two went out and took RISK. The third played it safe.
The reaction of the master to the first two--"Well done, good and faithful servant, you were faithful over a few things, I will make your ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your Lord."
The reaction of the master over the third servant--"and cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth (V.30)."

HE NEVER KNEW HIS MASTER

The sin was not mismanagement, but misunderstanding. The one-talent servant NEVER KNEW HIS MASTER. He should have. He lived under his roof and shared his address. He knew his face, his name, but HE NEVER KNEW HIS MASTER'S HEART.

FEARS LIST:

For fear of doing the wrong thing for God, I do nothing for God.

For fear of making the wrong kingdom decision, I make no kingdom decision.

For fear of messing up, I miss out.

Affirmations:

I PRAY DAILY TO THE GOD OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, FOR THE SPIRIT OF WISDOM AND REVELATION IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF HIM. (Ephesians 1:17)

I BELONG TO CHRIST, WHO WAS RAISED FROM THE DEAD, THAT I BEAR FRUIT UNTO HIM. (Romans 7:4)

JUST LIKE THE TREE OF LIFE NEAR THE THRONE OF GOD, I CONTINUALLY YIELD A FRESH CROP OF FRUIT. (Revelation 22:,1,2)

Parable of the Minas
Luke 19:12-27 - 12 Therefore He said: “A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return. 13 So he called ten of his servants, delivered to them ten minas,[a] and said to them, ‘Do business till I come.’ 14 But his citizens hated him, and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We will not have this man to reign over us.’ 15 “And so it was that when he returned, having received the kingdom, he then commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading. 16 Then came the first, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned ten minas.’ 17 And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant; because you were faithful in a very little, have authority over ten cities.’ 18 And the second came, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned five minas.’ 19 Likewise he said to him, ‘You also be over five cities.’ 20 “Then another came, saying, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I have kept put away in a handkerchief. 21 For I feared you, because you are an austere man. You collect what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’ 22 And he said to him, ‘Out of your own mouth I will judge you, you wicked servant. You knew that I was an austere man, collecting what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow. 23 Why then did you not put my money in the bank, that at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’ 24 “And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to him who has ten minas.’ 25 (But they said to him, ‘Master, he has ten minas.’) 26 ‘For I say to you, that to everyone who has will be given; and from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. 27 But bring here those enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, and slay them before me.’” NKJV

A mina represents the truths of God's word, our inheritance in Christ, the love of God shed abroad in our hearts, and the covenant blessing that are given to each believer. Each individual has the same; no one is given extra to start with.

This parable speaks of what every one of us as believers possess in Christ. These blessings are ours in Christ, but it is our faith that appropriates and manifests them here on earth. And it's our obedience and giving that causes them to multiply. This is why the nobleman, who represents Jesus, says to his servants (us) - "Do business till I come". We are to take what we have been given and multiply it to the glory of God.

Luke 19:20,24 - "Then another servant came and said, 'Sir here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. Then he said to those standing by, 'Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.'"

The master said "For I say to you, that to everyone who has, more will be given; and from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him."
More revelation will be given to him that has. This involves asking, seeking, and knocking (Matthew 7:7,8).

This parable shows that each man had the potential of multiplying his mina many times over. In regard to our personal lives, THERE IS NO LIMIT TO HOW MUCH WE CAN AFFECT AND BUILD THE KINGDOM OF GOD.

Affirmations:

I ALLOW THE SEED OF INCREDIBLE POTENTIAL WITHIN ME TO BE RELEASED AND DISPLAY THE GLORY OF GOD TO THE WORLD!

I FORGET THOSE THINGS WHICH ARE BEHIND, AND PRESS TOWARD THE MARK FOR THE PRIZE OF THE HIGH CALLING OF GOD IN CHRIST JESUS.
